What Makes Konalani Yoga Ashram So Unique?

Weave Ancient with Active

Founded on over a hundred years of meditation mastery and informed by the latest breakthroughs in functional movement methodologies, Shambhavananda Yoga seamlessly weaves the ancient with the active—making meditation and movement both blissful and sustainable for modern life.

Create Synergy not Injury

Experience a holistic approach to movement that aligns and harmonizes your body’s natural mechanics. Our methods unite muscles across their “movement teams,” creating synergy instead of injury. Through increased interoceptive awareness, you’ll develop a genuine appetite for movement—feeling your way into health, vitality, and freedom. This isn’t just a metaphor; it’s a methodology embedded into every cue in our classes.

Put the Spring Back in your Step

Picture yourself running around the playground with your child instead of watching from the sidelines. Completing a marathon without the fear of injury. Or finishing a day of yard work feeling strong and energized rather than nursing a sore back. Yoga with Konalani is based on supporting the natural spring in your connective tissue, creating a true appetite for movement.

Restore Balance Through Breath

Study after study reveals that many of us are over-breathing, living in a mild state of hyperventilation that contributes to a host of stress-related issues. At Konalani, our pranayama practices are designed to harmonize your breath, offering relief from the overstimulated and up-regulated nervous systems so common today. Rooted in ancient yogic traditions and informed by the latest advancements in pulmonology, our approach bridges timeless wisdom with modern science to help you restore balance and well-being.

Be a Buddha at the Bustop

Discover a meditation practice that transmutes daily life into a path of spiritual growth—the true essence of tantric practice. Empowered by four generations of realized teachers and sustained by the everyday efforts of ashram living and Sangha, this tradition offers a powerful and grounded approach to awakening.

Discover A Sangha of Support

Beyond movement, immerse yourself in the intangible joy of community—a supportive and inspiring network of practitioners dedicated to growth, connection, and evolution. At Konalani Yoga Ashram, you’ll discover a safe, nurturing space focused on helping individuals find health, consciousness, and bliss through the profound practices of the yogic tradition.

Feel Results Today

While you may not be healed on day one, you’ll clearly see the path to that lifelong destination. Our approach is grounded in thousands of years of meditation mastery, over a hundred years of lineage teachings, 60 years of thriving community building, and decades of excellence in yoga teacher training. Whether you’re new to yoga or looking to deepen your practice, we’re here to guide you every step of the way.

Ready to Begin Your Journey?!

Take the first step toward a healthier, more vibrant, and spiritually enriched life. Whether you’re new to yoga or ready to deepen your practice, Shambhavananda Yoga will guide you every step of the way.

The Problem: Fitness Yoga Causes Injury

Modern yoga’s emphasis on achieving specific shapes, isolating muscles, and mimicking fitness routines has created an ‘outside-in’ approach that lacks internal focus. This leads to dysfunctional movement and all too common yoga injuries (30,000 documented from 2001-2014), which develop slowly and silently, and can take years, or even a lifetime, to reverse:

Hamstring Tendonitis, “Yoga Butt”

One of the most common injuries in yoga, involves a tearing of the hamstring from the sit bone from an over-emphasis to the hamstring in flat-backed forward folds. Solution: Micro Bend knees and fold forward fluidly to engage the entire posterior chain.

Labral Tears in Hips

One of the most dangerous injuries featured in a New York Times Expose— a tear in the labrum of the hip socket due to stretching too deeply in Warrior postures without buoyant core support. Solution: Generate buoyant hip support through deep core engagement.

Compressed Spinal Discs

Reaching back in postures like Ustrasana can put the weight of our bends in the discs of our spine, instead of strengthening the muscles that support the spine. Solution: Elevate your backbends by lifting up, not back.

The Solution: Feeling is Healing

Cultivating Internal Awareness Through Natural Movement and Meditative Focus

Konalani combines an informed functional movement approach to yoga with a rich, authentic meditation tradition. Together, these practices provide a holistic solution to both the physical and spiritual challenges of modern yoga.

Your Body’s Built to Feel

Your nervous system prioritizes sensory awareness over action, with 20 times more neurons devoted to sensing your environment than controlling it. As David Lesondak explains, “The body’s need for sensory awareness and refinement is greater than its need for motor control.” At Konalani, we help you cultivate this awareness, because studies show that reduced proprioception leads to injury. Building this foundation is at the heart of your training.

Slow is Smooth and Smooth is Fast

Once you’ve cultivated inner sensation, the next step is maintaining that awareness as you move. This is why you’ll find yourself moving slowly, and repetitiously, through your asana practice at Konalani, rewiring both the neurological as well as muscular pathways. As they say in the Marines: “Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast.” Moving slowly is the foundation of speed, strength, and health, allowing you to feel every movement with precision. Yoga isn’t a workout; it’s a reset button—for your physical body and your nervous system.

An Upward Spiral of Spiritual Growth

Yoga is only the beginning—a stepping stone toward pranayama and meditation, practices that exponentially accelerate spiritual growth. That’s why every yoga class at Konalani culminates in one of our empowered and transformative meditation practices. We come from a lineage of realized Siddhas, and our methods are designed to create transformation at the deepest level.

“The purpose of meditation in yoga is to turn our attention in an inward direction and to become aware of and established in that state of divinity that exists inside us. Yogis believe that this divine consciousness is the substance of the creation of the whole universe, that this consciousness is all-pervasive, and that we can attain this state. They believe we can become not just one with God–we can actually experience that state of divinity within ourselves. It is not an ego trip, like “I’m God and you’re not.” It is a state of cosmic consciousness. The things that we see as unique and individual things are just a manifestation of karma. As we get closer to this state of clarity or of pure consciousness, we begin to see the unity of everything and eventually our consciousness becomes that all-pervasive conscious- ness. That is called enlightenment.”
