A Sample Packing List

Clothing and Essentials to Bring

Hawaii’s temperatures are fairly consistent and mild, so heavy layers are not necessary. However, it can be helpful to bring a few light layers for cooler morning meditation sessions or hikes at higher elevations.

Everyday Clothing:

  • Mostly shorts or capris, with one pair of longer pants for walks or hikes where they might be necessary.

  • A hat is great for keeping the sun off your face.

  • Shoes: Closed toe shoes are required for all outdoor seva. Strap sandals are sufficient for almost all casual activities here. If you’re used to wearing high-top hiking shoes for longer walks, feel free to bring them, but they’re usually not required.

  • Yoga Clothes: There will possibly be a couple of opportunities for a yoga class while you’re here

Shrine Attire: When meditating in the shrine, it’s nice to dress up slightly— one way to envision this is as if you were going out to eat with your grandparents—something special but not overly formal.

For men: pants and a collared shirt are a good option.

For women: pants or a longer dress/skirt that covers the knees while sitting for meditation. If you wear a sleeveless top, that is perfectly fine in the shrine given the warm climate—just keep the overall feel respectful and modest.

Beach and Outdoor Essentials

  • Don’t forget your swimsuit and flip-flops (called slippers here).

  • Sunglasses and a reusable water bottle are essential.

  • Sunscreen and bug repellent: You can bring a small (4 oz. or less) version in your carry-on, pack a larger one in your checked luggage, or purchase them locally when you arrive.

  • A flashlight or headlamp is optional but helpful if you need more light than your phone provides when walking at night.

Provided at the Ashram

  • We provide beach towels and bath towels—no need to pack these.

  • We also provide yoga mats and meditation cushions, so you can leave yours at home unless you prefer to bring your personal favorites.

Additional Items

  • Bring any medications or supplements you may need.
